our philosophy

Grooming, at a dog's pace.

Paws of Kilmacolm was built around one idea: a groom should feel like a spa afternoon, not an ordeal. Our salon runs on quiet, natural light, low noise, and appointments that are never double-booked — so every dog gets our full attention, start to finish.

We work with nervous first-timers, elderly dogs, and everything in between, at a pace set by them rather than the clock.

  • One dog in the salon at a time — no queues, no crates stacked in a back room.
  • Low-noise dryers and handling techniques suited to anxious or elderly dogs.
  • Products chosen for sensitive skin and coats, breed by breed.

"Half of good grooming is a dog who trusts you. We spend as much time on that as we do on the scissors."

Our terrier is terrified of the dryer everywhere else. Here he practically falls asleep on the table.

Our old girl has bad hips and they were so patient getting her comfortable on the table.

Booking was easy and they actually text you a reminder the day before. Small thing, appreciated.

Best hand-strip our Westie has ever had, and he's normally a nightmare for groomers.

Frequently asked questions

Draft answers — message Katherine if your question isn't covered here.

Most coats are happiest on a 6–8 week rhythm. Doodles, poodle mixes and anything that mats can need 4–6 weeks. We'll look at the coat on the day and suggest a schedule that keeps them comfortable rather than a calendar that suits us.
Yes — that's a large part of why the salon is one dog at a time. First visits are slower, reward-led, and never forced through a dryer or table if your dog isn't ready. Tell us what they find hard (clippers, nails, other dogs) when you book.
Your dog, any usual treats, and a note of health quirks (skin, hips, ears, heart). If you have a preferred clip or a photo of a previous groom, bring that too. We'll confirm vaccination requirements with you before the first visit.
Typically between 1½ and 3 hours, depending on coat, condition and how your dog likes to work. We don't double-book, so the appointment is theirs until they're finished — not until the next dog is due on the table.
We ask that dogs are up to date with core vaccinations, or that you discuss titre tests or medical exemptions with Katherine in advance of the first visit.
Please give 24 hours' notice if you need to move an appointment, so we can offer the slot to another dog. Late cancellations may be charged — we'll confirm the exact terms with you.
Most dogs settle better without an audience, so we usually work one-to-one in the salon. If your dog is very young, elderly or anxious, say so when you book and we'll agree what will help them most.
